About AlphaMinds Reading Program

Welcome to our Reading program for students in grade PreK through grade 4! Our program is designed to foster a love for reading and develop essential literacy skills that lay the foundation for academic success. ​ Through our engaging and interactive classes, led by experienced teachers and reading specialists, students will embark on a captivating journey of language exploration. Our curriculum focuses on building strong reading fluency, comprehension, and writing skills, tailored to the unique needs and developmental stages of each grade level. ​ In our program, students will delve into a world of captivating stories, diverse genres, and enriching literary experiences. They will learn essential reading strategies, vocabulary development techniques, and effective comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding of texts. Our classes incorporate a variety of multimedia resources, games, songs, and hands-on activities to make the learning process enjoyable and meaningful. We understand the importance of nurturing a growth mindset and promoting a positive reading culture. AFTER SCHOOL (WEEKDAYS) - ONLINE CLASSES

READING I: Phonics for Emerging Readers (Gr. PreK-K)

This class is designed to introduce young learners (primarily, students in PreK and K) to the world of reading through fun and engaging activities. This class will focus on the strengthening of phonemic awareness skills through sound and word discrimination, blending, phoneme deletion and manipulation, identifying and reading DOLCH sight words and developing comprehension skills. We use a variety of teaching methods, such as storytelling, interactive games, and group reading, to keep our students engaged and excited about learning. By the end of this class, our students will have developed a foundation for reading and a love for books that will last a lifetime. This class is conducted in a small group setting led by a certified elementary school teacher who specializes in teaching early literacy classes. Classes take place twice a week; the duration of each lesson is 30 minutes. ​ For the Winter-Spring 2024 session, groups are formed based on the students' reading level as follows: Reading I-A (Pre-Primer Level): for children new to reading to reading or reading up to level A-D

READING II: Fluency for Rising Readers (Gr. 1-2)

This class is designed to build upon the foundation laid in Reading I-B classes and further develop students' reading skills. We focus on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through a variety of activities, including group reading, independent reading, and interactive games. Our curriculum is designed to challenge students while keeping the learning process fun and engaging. By the end of this class, our students will have improved their reading skills and developed a love for reading that will serve them well throughout their academic career. This class is conducted in a small group setting led by a certified elementary school teacher who specializes in teaching early literacy. For the Winter-Spring 2024 session, groups are formed based on the students' reading level as follows: *New students: this class is recommended to students who are currently reading at level I-J (A to Z scale) and slightly above (if you are not sure about your child's reading level, please contact us at info@alphamindsacademy.com for an assessment) **Current/Returning students: this class is for students who were enrolled into our Reading II class during the Fall 2023 session.

READING III: Comprehension and Writing Skills (Gr. 2-3)

This class is designed to help students improve their reading comprehension skills and develop their writing abilities. Through a combination of group discussions and individual activities, students will learn how to analyze and interpret different types of texts, including fiction and nonfiction. They will also learn how to express their thoughts and ideas through writing, including sentence structure, paragraph formation, and basic grammar. Our engaging lessons include easy-to-follow explanations, examples, and charts for visual learners! By the end of this class, our students will have the skills and confidence needed to read and write effectively. This class is conducted in a small group setting led by a certified elementary school teacher who specializes in teaching early literacy classes. ​ For the Winter-Spring 2024 session, groups are formed based on the students' reading level as follows: *New students: this class is recommended to students who are currently reading at level M-O and above (if you are not sure about your child's reading level, please contact us at info@alphamindsacademy.com for an assessment) **Current/Returning students: this class is for students who were enrolled into our Reading III class during the Fall 2023 session

OUR LITERACY TEAM

Arielle Engelmeyer
Arielle has been tutoring students for over 12 years and has been a teacher, from Pre-K to 5th grade, for the last six. She graduated with a BA in English with an Education minor and then got her Masters in Reading and Literacy. Arielle continued her learning by studying both the Wilson Language and Orton-Gillingham reading methods, which teach multi-sensory approaches to phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. When Arielle is not teaching students how to read, she hosts a Mommy and Me class for toddlers and has dance parties with her three children.
Milena Thomas
Milena Thomas is a dedicated educator with over 21 years of teaching experience in various settings, from private tutoring to working in Montessori and International schools in China and the US. She holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan, Montessori Early Childhood Certification, Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory Language training, and is currently pursuing her Certified Dyslexia Specialist training. Apart from her love for teaching, Milena is an accomplished singer and voice teacher, sharing her passion for music with others. She cherishes family time with her three children, and in her spare time, she enjoys gardening, cycling, baking, fiber arts, and studying Mandarin Chinese.
Kayla Pearson
Kayla has been an educator for 15 years and specializes in providing reading intervention services rooted in multisensory modalities and research-based methods. She began her career in education supporting students with Autism within the public school system in Sacramento and San Francisco, California. She quickly realized that teaching was her passion and became a certified Educational Specialist and then went on to earn a Masters in Special Education. Through this journey she found that a strong foundation in literacy made a significant impact in the lives of her students and sought out to become a specialist in this area. Kayla is trained in Lindamood-Bell, Orton-Gillingham, and Wilson literacy interventions and uses these principles to create customized and meaningful reading and writing learning experiences. Kayla went on to become an Assistant Director of a literacy Clinic in San Francisco and then as a teaching coach in California and abroad. Her approach to education is that learning should be rooted in research based practices, reflect each learners' strengths and interests, and have real-world integration and application. She believes that developing strong literacy skills and a love of learning creates the path for students to become future leaders.
